The Mustard Seed September 2011 "Ask Pastor" by Pastor Ron Friedrich christdeaf@verizon.net If the Bible calls Jesus "the Son of God,"
why do you say that Jesus is God? Answer: Because the Bible calls Jesus "God." The Bible teaches that there is only One God, but God is three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When the Bible calls Jesus "the Son of God," that does not mean that Jesus is less than God. That title "Son of God" describes Christ's relationship with the Father, and "Son of God" describes Christ's role in our salvation. Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus is true God? A lot of places! Isaiah 9.6-7 "A
child has been born to us; God has given a Son to us. He will be
responsible for leading the people. His name will be Wonderful
Counselor, Powerful God..." John 1.1 "In the beginning was the Word [Christ], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Romans 9.5 "...Christ was born, who is God over all." Philippians 2.6 "In His very nature Christ was God..." Remember God's holy Name in the Old Testament: YHWH = "I AM" (Exodus 3.14) This Name was so holy that in Jesus' time, the Jewish priests and teachers would not say the holy Name even when they read it in the Hebrew Scriptures. Yet, Jesus called Himself by that holy Name of God several times. The clearest example was John 8.58 "Before Abraham was, I AM." The Jewish leaders understood what Jesus meant, because the next verse says, "At this they picked up stones to stone him to death." Remember that Jesus appeared to "doubting Thomas" one week after His resurrection. When Thomas saw Jesus, Thomas said, "My Lord and my God!" This was not just an emotional expression like people use today as a curse word. No, Thomas recognized the Jesus was his Lord and God. Now notice how Jesus responded to Thomas' confession of faith: "You believe because you see me. Those who believe without seeing me will be truly happy." (John 20.26-29) ~~Pastor Ron
